I am probably going to rant about this for a while a it really does piss me off that the UK press just like to make a massive story out of something that on the big scale of things is pretty trivial really.

What do you feel about the Snow situation and the way the media are making it sound like the end of days.

I posted my thoughts as a comment to your rant but i'll repeat myself a little.
I agree that the media are hyping up some reports but in places, it really did look as bad as they made it out to be.
For us, the snow is causing problems.
I also start a new job on Monday with my induction on Friday. With lucky (and now I have most likely jinxed myself) it will have cleared up enough for me to escape and get into town. I don't want to have to phone in on my first day and complain about not being able to make it through the snow. I should think I would be alright though. Dad taught me some car control (okay, that's the excuse we're sticking to but all we were doing is mini drifting around corners) the last time it snowed so i'm sure I could handle myself if I was careful enough.

Must be great for the kiddies though.

I am conscious that there are people that will suffer during this cold period and I for one would never want to be seen to take the piss out of them, what really gets up my nose is the media and also how unprepared we seem to be as a nation when these things actually happen.

Let's face it we are unprepared as a nation for most types of weather condition probably because of the UK's location in the world and the fact that we seem to experience every type of extreme weather system. It must be very difficult to plan in advance for what could be every eventuality.
With the snow, it must be a gamble. How much grit and salt do we get in? How much do we lay down every night? Which roads are we going to do? If they'd have bought millions of tonnes of the stuff and we'd have had a mild winter would we all be moaning about the local councils spending our Council tax on huge grit mountains going to waste?
I'm fed up with the first few minutes of the news being taken up with Snow, snow and more snow. The language they use is designed to scaremonger which annoys me. Words like "gripped in a freeze" make it sound like we're never going to be released. And of course, we will. And then we will start to forget - so that the next time it happens we will be just as unprepared as we are now!

I agree with what you say about the UK experiences all types of weather which is nice. Rather than it being hot or cold all year round, we get to see the seasons. We appreciate it when it gets hot and sunny and then it is nice to have snow for Christmas.
But we are unprepared. And you're right about it being hit or miss. Either we're ill prepared or overdoing it.
I tried to use Google to find out what people think is the reason for all the snow but it only came up with reports about how the UK had grinded to a halt. Does anyone know if this is climate change due to global warming. I don't understand a lot about it.
But, if it is, wouldn't this start happening more a lot more in Winter? If so, would be able to start preparing ourselves better?

I wish we could cope with the snow. I love the sound of the snow crunching under my boots and wrapping up in woolly scarves and getting a red nose! I like Autumn best but Winter is nice too.
